Limavady Pig Farm

PLease see below a copy objection letter to this pig farm. We would encourage all members to submit an objection as the effects of the slurry output etc will have a very detrimental effect on the environment.

I object to the proposed industrial scale pig farm on the outskirts of Limavady (Application number B/2015/0005/F).

I summarise a more comprehensive objection which can be found at https://www.foe.co.uk/northern-ireland/page/stop-monster-pig-farm and which I fully support:

1.         The proposed waste from the facility (more than 50,000 tonnes a year, including pig slurry and waste contaminated with sulphuric acid) would be spread on land adjacent to Lough Foyle and in catchment areas of the rivers Roe and Faughan. There are particular environmental and public health concerns with pig slurry.

2.         There are 15 sites within these catchments classified as Special Protection Areas (SPA), Special Areas of Conservation (SAC) or Areas of Special Scientific Interest (ASSI). The River Roe and tributaries ASSI is one of the most important salmon rivers in the British Isles, and includes a long list of protected species. There are serious concerns about the health and vulnerability of River Roe and Tributaries SAC.

3.         The methodology used by the Northern Ireland Environment Agency, Shared Environmental Services and the Planning Authority to assess for likely impact on the protected habitats in the area is flawed. These agencies may also be acting unlawfully in failing to apply a precautionary approach when determining whether an appropriate assessment is necessary.

With regard to the proposed pig farm I object to the following:

•           The Integrated Pollution Prevention & Control (IPPC) permit application

•           The Associated Waste Management License application

•           The retrospective Planning Application LA01/2017/0785/F for an Anaerobic Digester
