Nature & Environment Protection Group

Nature Matters NI is a campaign led by a coalition of environmental organisations in Northern Ireland. That are on a mission to protect nature so that we can secure the best future for our environment after Brexit.

  • Nature Matters NI is campaigning for:
  • A sustainable agriculture and land use policy that is fair to farmers, good for nature and benefits society.
  • Nature and environmental protection to ensure our most treasured species and habitats can thrive.
  • A nature-friendly marine and fisheries policy to protect our seas and marine biodiversity.
  • Funding for nature conservation to replace existing EU funding programmes such as LIFE+ and INTERREG.
  • As part of Nature Matters N I the Ulster Angling Federation sit on the above detailed committee and at a recent meeting we called on Government to consider the following points.
  • Undertake research into options for improving environmental governance in NI, including potential for an independent environmental protection agency
  •
  • Problem and Objective – NI has a poor record with regards environmental governance, and there have been a number of high profile failures in recent years. Even though repeated enquiries and research reports have recommended a new approach to environmental governance, the NI government has largely failed to act. This has created the situation where NI is one of only 2 countries across Europe without an independent environmental protection agency. This situation has been further complicated by Brexit, as the UK will now need to develop new governance structures to replace the existing EU oversight. There is a clear risk that without action to improve environmental governance in NI, Brexit will exacerbate these problems.
  • Relevance – The environment needs a transparent and accountable system of Governance. This is exactly what Open Government is about.
